my cat is 7 and overweight from being in the pound for so long.?
I haven't owned a cat since high school so I'm not sure about how much to feed her. She was in the pound for 5 months before I got her. I have her eating a food called "chicken soup for the cat lovers soul" light adult formula which is supposed to be healthier. My sister said I should feed her 2/3 cup a day, 1/3 in the morning and 1/3 at night. She's 7, weighs 10 pounds and is a calico/medium size breed.
I don't want to be under feeding her and she whines at me all the time when her food runs out. I don't cave just because I want her to be healthy but I worry that I'm not giving her enough.
Depending on the genetic makeup of your cat, she may NOT be overweight at 10 lbs. I have a Himalayan / Siamese female, and she weighs a healthy 11.4 lbs. She's not fat, just has a large "Persian/Himalayan" body structure. I also have a large male Tabby that weighs 14.4 lbs, and the vet says he's okay, too.........SO........
Unless she was a starving "street" cat before she was at the pound, she won't overeat when you leave food out for her....24 / 7........
Set out a dish ( 2 cups ) of the dry food, and watch her. My cats "nibble" for a few minutes ...many times a day. Just enough to "curb" their hunger, so I refill their ( 2 ) bowls each morning, and most of it is gone by the next morning.
If you don't "schedule" feedings, she won't "gobble" her food.......she'll just eat when she's hungry...around the clock. When she can "nibble" whenever she feels hunger "pangs", she'll stop whining for food......
You can adjust the amount you put in her bowl, but try not to be upset if she eats a lot the first few days. She'll "adjust" her own feedings as she realizes that the food isn't going to be taken away, or the dish run out of food......Just be sure she has FRESH water nearby 24/7.......
Hope this helps.........Good luck........ENJOY your new "family member".....
