Help me figure out my helmet options for a moped, please?
Just bought a moped...I have little or no experience with motorcycles/mopeds. I know I should get a DOT approved helmet, but beyond that, there are way too many options out there. Please give me a quick rundown on the various options and how they are different. I'm not interested in brands...I just need to understand the various styles. Half-helmets, 3/4-helmets, huh??? I also know I'd like something to shield my eyes, but I don't know if a visor is better, or if I should get some good goggles and skip the visor.
DOT-approved helmets aren't that awesome. You want to look for something that meets the Snell 2010 requirements or the latest European standards. Full-face is the only way to go. With any other style, no matter what people may tell you, there's always a chance of your face meeting asphalt. You obviously don't want bugs/rocks/whatever flying into your eyes, and yes, goggles can stop them, but what about the rest of your face? Goggles don't cover your nose. A rock smacking you in the nose and causing you to lose control of your bike would suck a lot worse than a chipped/cracked visor on a full-face helmet.
Also, avoid flip-up helmets. These seem like a great compromise between full-face and 3/4-face helmets, but I've seen several demonstrations where the faces can flip up with even a mild impact and expose the face when you don't want it to.
