How good do you think Patriots CB Devin McCourty will be?
Devin McCourty was taken in the first round of the 2010 draft by the New England Patriots at 27th overall. I was infuriated by the pick as I felt we had much more pressing needs at pass rusher and nobody even had this kid on their draft board... but I'm very happy to admit I was wrong. He was thrust into the spot as #1 CB when Leigh Bodden went onto IR with a shoulder injury in preseason and he really did much better than anybody expecting. McCourty finished his rookie season starting in all 16 games, snagging 7 picks (including Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre) and really came into his own as a legit shutdown corner on a team with zero pass rush which is very impressive, especially for a rookie. Anyways, how good do you believe Devin McCourty is going to be? Will he turn into a legit shutdown corner who takes #1 receivers out of games like a Nnamdi Asomugha type, or will he be an average corner?
I don't think 7 interceptions is a mistake. For a rookie that is a great feat. I think McCourty will be fine, as long as he works well in the system and stays healthy. Also, if the defensive schemes enhance his ability to work in his role, then I think he will be fine. Some CB's do well over time, and others fade. I don't know that McCourty is one of those guys. He has raw talent, he is accurate and knows where the ball and WR are, and he's quick to make it to the WR to stop him from making plays. I think he's talented, and I believe he will be a force in years to come.
